Register with the police
After arrival, complete the registration procedure with the police (at the border or the nearest station). If you need accommodation, initial reception is provided at the Logatec centre.

Within 3 working days after registration, submit the vloga on the official form at any upravna enota. An application filed with the police is forwarded to the upravna enota without delay. The upravna enota decides — the statutory deadline is 30 days.

Receive the temporary protection ID card
After a positive decision the upravna enota issues a free ID card, which also serves as a temporary residence permit. New ZZZRO-1 cards (since 19.07.2025) have no printed expiry date — valid while protection lasts.

Arrange financial aid and accommodation
Housing: state accommodation centres or private housing (for status holders — with private accommodation aid paid monthly by UOIM; the decision covers 3 months or the lease duration). Cash assistance/pocket money — via UOIM forms; those able to work must register with the Employment Service.

What happens after protection ends
Protection runs until 04.03.2028 (Slovenia applies the EU Council decision; ZZZRO-1 cards remain valid without re-issue). Afterwards: a single residence and work permit (enotno dovoljenje) with an employer, study, family reunification or international protection. Time under temporary protection generally does not count towards permanent residence — switch to “ordinary” grounds early if you can.

FAQ
Do I need to do anything to keep my protection after the current period?
You do not need to file any extension application. By Council Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/1912 of 30 July 2026 the EU Council extended temporary protection until 4 March 2028. For people whose status is already recognised in Slovenia, protection continues without having to prove again that they meet Ukrainian military-service obligations. The new rules apply only to applications lodged in Slovenia after 5 August 2026 (including applications by people who already hold temporary protection in another country). The current protection period runs to 4 March 2027; the extension to 2028 was adopted in advance. The Slovenian government states plainly that future extensions are carried out in the information systems only, with no new cards issued — so there is no letter and no new document to wait for. Under ZZZRO-1 (Art. 57(5)) your izkaznica is itself a temporary residence permit until the status ends, and it no longer carries an expiry date. Your registered temporary residence is extended ex officio in the register (Art. 60(2)). If you still hold an old card valid "until 4 March 2026", the administrative unit (upravna enota) issues a new one without an expiry date; if you have not received it, contact them. WHAT YOU MUST DO (Art. 56 ZZZRO-1). Within 8 days of learning of the fact, notify the authority handling your case (the upravna enota; for financial assistance, the Government Office UOIM) on the prescribed form — "Obrazec za sporočanje sprememb" and "Obrazec za sporočanje odsotnosti" are published on gov.si. You must report: a change of address; a change of contact details; a change of personal name; a change of marital status; taking up or ending employment; income, receipts and property or their loss — your own, your family members' and dependants'; education; absence from the accommodation centre for more than 24 hours; absence from Slovenia for more than 15 days; obtaining international protection, a residence permit or temporary protection in another country; permanent return to Ukraine; acquiring another citizenship. Separately, any change to the data shown on the card must be reported within 8 days (Art. 57(13)). If you move house you do not need to replace the card (it carries no address), but you must register the new address with the upravna enota. WHAT NOT TO DO. Do not leave for a long period without reporting it. If the upravna enota establishes that you have permanently returned to Ukraine or permanently moved to another country (it weighs the length of your absence and the fact that the authorities could not reach you), it opens a procedure to end your status (Art. 20(1), on the ground in Art. 19(1)(6)). Status also ends if you obtain protection, a residence permit or temporary protection in another state. DEADLINES AFTER STATUS ENDS — do not confuse them. The 30 days of lawful stay (Art. 23(1)) apply ONLY where protection ended because its period expired. If your status was ended by a decision in your case, those 30 days do not apply. Separately, Art. 19(10) gives 10 days to apply for a temporary residence permit — and only on some grounds (expiry of the period, renunciation of status, acquiring the citizenship of another state, the family-member case), not on the "permanent return or departure" ground. The card must be returned to the upravna enota within 8 days after the status ends (Art. 57(15)). Do I need to replace my old card and until when is the status valid?
The status is extended until 04.03.2028. New ZZZRO-1 cards (issued since 19.07.2025) carry no printed date — they are valid while temporary protection lasts. If you hold an old dated card, ask your upravna enota about replacement.
Can I travel to Ukraine?
Short visits to Ukraine are allowed and do not by themselves end the status. BUT: absences from Slovenia over 15 days must be reported (the “odsotnost” form), and prolonged absence may lead to withdrawal of temporary protection.
What if my passport is non-biometric or expired?
Apply with the documents you have and add any evidence of residence in Ukraine before 24.02.2022. The upravna enota assesses each case individually (an abbreviated examination procedure). In parallel, obtain a new passport at the Ukrainian embassy in Ljubljana.
Can I work in Slovenia?
Yes, temporary protection holders have free labour market access. For cash assistance, those able to work must register with the Employment Service of Slovenia. The self-employed report health insurance data via form M3.
