Do you need to do anything?

Nothing to do: Portugal extends temporary protection for everyone at once by a single Council of Ministers Resolution — your existing permit stays valid with no application, no appointment at AIMA and no card replacement. As of 3 September 2026 the resolution covering the period after 4 March 2027 has not yet been adopted; by settled practice it is published in the first weeks of March with retroactive effect from 5 March, so just watch AIMA's news in late February–March 2027. Where: AIMA (Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo) — but you do not need to file anything or go anywhere. The extension is adopted by the Council of Ministers in a single resolution (Resolução do Conselho de Ministros) for everyone at once; the text is published in the Diário da República (diariodarepublica.pt), and the announcement on aima.gov.pt/pt/noticias. Important: 1) The main practical risk is not "missing an application" but a time gap. Portugal adopts the resolution AFTER the expiry date, retroactively: RCM 47/2025 — 17 March 2025, effective from 5 March 2025; RCM 53-A/2026 — 12 March 2026, effective from 5 March 2026. So for roughly one to two weeks in early March your document shows a date that has already passed, and the new resolution is not out yet. Employers, banks, Segurança Social and hospitals may ask about this. Keep the link to the AIMA news item and to the text of the resolution in the Diário da República at hand. 2) The date on the permit itself is not reprinted and no new card is issued — validity comes from the government resolution, not from what is printed on the document.
