Ukrainians are NOT permitted visa-free entry to Japan. Entry is by visa only (a guarantor in Japan is usually required), followed by a change of status to "Designated Activities" (1 year, work rights). Since 01.12.2023 a complementary protection system grants "Long-Term Resident" status.
IMPORTANT: Ukrainians are NOT permitted visa-free entry to Japan — this is not a universal admission programme. A guarantor (relative or acquaintance) in Japan is usually required for the visa; people without guarantors were admitted through government matching, but the scale is small (per the Immigration Services Agency, from 02.03.2022 to 31.07.2026 about 2,900 evacuees entered, ~500 of them without a guarantor; ~1,935 currently reside in Japan). If you are already in Japan — renew your "Designated Activities" (1 year) status on time, or consider applying for complementary protection, which grants the more stable "Long-Term Resident" (定住者) status. If you are only planning to leave Ukraine or the EU — be realistic: without a guarantor in Japan the visa chances are low; contact the Japanese embassy well in advance.
